Free email providers are highly abused by scammers in such crimes as the Nigerian 419 frauds.

Thankfully, most of the large free email service providers (ESPs) are quick to suspend such criminal abuses, which break their terms of service.

When abuser accounts are suspended, countless scams in progress are nipped in the bud, and less crimes are committed. The major ESPs are conscious that it is a competitive marketplace, even for free services. They know that they have to protect their reputation for integrity, and nobody wants to gain a reputation for being a safe harbor for criminal fraud.

419 deposit scams has been my biggest culprit lately......since the advent of Complainterator....nipping at the registrars....these guys have gone the way of FreeMail providers....with the latest Gmail developments, I've got a neat little "preset template" saved for each provider......that is until Yahoo! and Hotmail stopped responding to abuse emails.....via e-mail......yeea, go figure (they likely could not keep up either....lol) - so now they forward you to a 10 question form to "report spam" to......

So far so good, it's a pain in the arse, but it does get the job done......
