However, https://secure.interpol.int works fine.

By the time I learned about this, the fuss was over.

Why the attack? Probably in response to Interpol's issuing the Red Notice prior to the arrest this week of Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He may be extradited back to Sweden to serve his time and pay his fine. (12 months jail plus a $1.1 million dollar fine). It seems that the Swedish government has sent a group of officials to Cambodia where they will discuss procedures for the extradition of Svartholm also known as Anakata. The arrest was at the request of the Swedish government.

Interpol counters the DDOS attack

INTERPOL secure website URL has changed.

For reasons linked to cybersecurity, INTERPOL has changed the URL link for the INTERPOL secure website. Effective immediately, the existing https://www.interpol.int has changed to https://secure.interpol.int.

The new URL link is already available, and both URLs will remain active until the beginning of October. From that point forward, it will no longer be possible to access the secure website via https://www.interpol.int.

Users are asked to begin using the new URL immediately, and to update any ‘favourites’ or saved links.

Another possible reason for an attack on Interpol, is the other Red Notice put out at the request of the Swedish Government, although this has been in existence since 2010:

INTERPOL Red Notice for Julian Assange remains in force
LYON, France – INTERPOL confirms that its Red Notice, or international wanted persons alert, issued for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at Sweden’s request in November 2010 remains valid.

Confirmation that Mr Assange’s Red Notice status remains in force follows Thursday’s decision by authorities in Ecuador to grant asylum to Mr Assange, two months after he took refuge in its London embassy while fighting extradition from the UK to Sweden where authorities want to question him in connection with alleged sexual offences.

A Red Notice status is a request for any country to identify or locate an individual with a view to their provisional arrest and extradition in accordance with the country’s national laws.

Many of INTERPOL's member countries consider a Red Notice a valid request for provisional arrest, especially if they are linked to the requesting country via a bilateral extradition treaty. In cases where arrests are made based on a Red Notice, these are made by national police officials in INTERPOL member countries.

INTERPOL cannot compel any of its 190 member countries to arrest the subject of a Red Notice. Any individual wanted for arrest should be considered innocent until proven guilty.
