Sept 27, 2011 Romania steps up punishments for cyber crime

We have all seen IPs located in Romania being used for countless illegal web sites. Every scam under the sun can be found there. When a country becomes that prevalent it can affect the general perception of the whole country. This can have unfortunate flow-on effects, reducing tourism and the country's economy. Romania's precarious economy can ill afford such losses.

"Nearly all forms of cybercrime are present in Romania, including fake online auctions, VoIP fraud, credit card cloning and the manufacturing of skimming devices. The most popular type of online fraud among Romania's cybercriminals, though, is phishing."

"Phishing is so widespread in Romania that it has almost become a national brand, colouring how foreigners perceive the country, especially in cyberspace."

It is heartening to read that DIICOT is taking the whole problem seriously and looking at ways to address a country-wide problem. Other countries have come to the same realization

"It's not only Romanian authorities that are cracking down on cybercrime. Other Eastern European countries with long histories of online fraud, including Ukraine and Bulgaria, have also stepped up their efforts."

I don't think they should go after individual countries, I think they should force our FBI to not wait until a crook steals over quarter of million dollars before the lift a finger!

I don't know if anyone been to Ukraine, but even if they say they'll do something it will be very little

Unfortunately, that's pretty much the way they operate -- let someone dig themselves such a deep hole that they have no choice but to plead guilty, then make the arrest. Eventually they get nailed, but not until dozens of other spammers try to emulate them, convinced that none of the laws they have broken will ever be enforced.

also the biggest threat is not eastern europe but China.. it's okey when it comes to consumer problems, but what about cyber terrorism? This is another solution proposed by the head of the FBI which looks pretty interesting. Kind of bizarre but definitely interesting for water and power plants
